The Issue with Equity (As Defined by the Left)
The left would have you believe that unless all humans start off on a level playing field, then outcomes will not be equal. They push this idea to describe white privilege and systemic racism. I believe in equality. That is to say equal opportunity. However, I do not believe that it is the government's job to make sure that I start off on the same level as my neighbor.
The issue with their version of equity is that it looks a lot like socialism. Since my wife and I, being one entity, have made a successful life for ourselves, we must be privileged, and that privilege must be stripped and spread to those less privileged than us. This is socialism.
The other argument that they will make will be that the systems in place are inherently racist and thus we got ahead because we are white, and thus equal opportunity wasn't achievable. Fifty years ago I would have agreed with you, however racism, while it still exists, is not as wide spread as it use to be. We live in extremely rural Iowa. Statistically, the black culture congregates to larger populations. Is this a race thing or a cultural thing? Statistics would point to culture. Because of this you might look at my wife's place of employment and think they are systemically racist because 95% of their staff are white. OH THE HUMANITY! You would be wrong, the areas population dictated that.
This is what I would define as modern day racism that proves unequal outcomes. Let's say I interview 2 candidates for a non-entry level job. One candidate is white, has a 4 year degree with a 3.7 GPA, and 4 years work experience. He promotes himself as determined and wanting the job. The second candidate is black, has the same 4 year degree but with a 2.5 GPA, and no work experience. He doesn't really promote himself at all, and doesn't really seem to interested in the company. However, I have diversity quotas to hit, so I hire the black candidate even though he wasn't nearly as qualified as the white candidate. People can argue that this doesn't happen, but it does.
This happens in colleges, workplaces, etc. Because a white person is deemed "privileged" the "privilege" must be stripped away. This is racism as well. Equity means you treat people fairly, which is great. Socially you should. However, the leftists skew the definition to be racist. Instead of trying to lift the black community up, they have to knock the white community down. This is how they want to achieve their level playing field.
There is no such thing as a level playing field. Every single individual is...well...an individual. They are different, and because of this they will all choose a different field to play on.
